WP1: Institutional Capacity building on climate smart and resource efficient agriculture production with emphasis on rice (Lead Partners: NIBIO and TARI)
The aim of WP1 is to build on the existing knowledge, experiences, skills, and gaps relevant to rice value chains. The main targeted groups include scientists, extension workers and lead farmers and other relevant value chain (VCs) actors in the study districts where rice is grown using rainfed and/or irrigation systems. The training will be given to extension workers, lead farmers and other farmers (including women and youth) in the rice producing areas of the project districts. Capacity building for rice companies/cooperatives may focus on SRP related to market requirements both within and outside the country.
WP2: Implementing on-farm trials/demo on SRI and targeted trainings (Lead Partners: TARI & NIBIO)
The main objective is to conduct the on-farm trials and initiate capacity building of agricultural staff in Tanzania, scientists, smallholders (including women and youth) private sector, civil society organisations – rice cooperatives/associations.
The main expected outcome will be improved agronomic practices of farmers through implementation of crop diversification, efficient input use (water, fertilizer), improved soil health, weed and IPM. The crop diversification includes growing chickpeas, green gram or edible Lablab that can utilize residual soil moisture after rice harvest. These crops increase productivity, improve household nutrition and soil health.
WP3: Project Coordination and Reporting: (Lead partner: NIBIO)
NIBIO will have the responsibility for overall coordination, management, and reporting to Norad. It will jointly prepare project workplan with TARI and follow up the project implementation during the three years period. It will also report to Norad periodically on project progress including financial reporting.
